Are horizontal Bar Railings to code?

USA residential guard rail standards permit horizontal railings. This is why we see a horizontal bar and cable railing across the U.S. Check your local building codes office to see if horizontal railing systems are permitted in your local jurisdiction.

What is the code for horizontal Bar Railing spacing?

In the U.S. railing code, you often hear references to the 4 inch Sphere Rule, and if stairs are involved, you will see the 6 inch Sphere Rule referenced. The 4 Inch Sphere Rule refers to gaps within a railing system where a 4" sphere should be unable to pass through any opening in a railing system. The only exception to this rule is on stairs where the bottom run of the infill and the stair tread meets a stair riser states a 6-inch sphere should be unable to pass through this triangular gap.

Are horizontal Bar Railings more expensive?

Horizontal railings typically cost less than vertical design with less material required for installation. Horizontal designs also involve fewer connections which reduces the installation time, fasteners, and hardware utilized, helping to lower the overall costs.

How far apart do horizontal Bar balusters need to be?

Balusters are the rail components used to provide infill for deck guardrails. In the U.S. railing code, the 4 inch Sphere Rule defines the maximum spacing between balusters. When installed, the balusters need to be able to withstand 50 pounds of pressure exerted over a 1-sqft area.

Can deck railings be horizontal?

Horizontal Railing designs allow you to utilize whatever material you want for the railing. You can use composite, glass, cable, or settle for more conventional materials such as wood or metal, giving you a higher degree of flexibility in design. Horizontal stainless steel Bar Railings give you the best option when considering longevity and ease of maintenance.

Are horizontal Bar Deck Railings pet friendly?

To maintain the look and quality of the railing and to have a pet-safe railing also means keeping the design must be safe for your pet. Railings with sharp corners or decorations are dangerous because pets can cut or scrape themselves. Pets can also be in danger of ingesting paint chips or splinters from flaking paint and wooden railings. The design of Inline Design's stainless steel Seattle Bar Railing system minimizes the sharp edges with zero danger of your pet ingesting any paint chips or splinters.
